Accomplishments

It Can't be done . . .

But we proved them wrong!

When Wyoming SFW was first formed, membership surveys indicated that predator control was a high priority. In four short years, through the efforts of SFW - along with many other persons and groups, the USFWS delisted the grizzly bear in 2007 and the wolf in 2008.

At first the Wyoming management plan was denied because the USFWS did not appreciate the plan's classification of the wolf (in the majority of the state) as a predator. This refusal came in spite of the fact that the USFWS' own wolf scientists - selected by themselves - agreed that the Wyoming plan would work. Yet the USFWS stubbornly refused to move forward. Wyoming sued. SFW and FNAWS were the only two sports groups to join in that suit.

Late in 2006, the USFWS approached Wyoming to propose a compromise. This was the beginning of a breakthrough, which SFW was instrumental in forging into a legislative compromise in February 2007. With the invaluable aid of multiple volunteers, our Executive Director was able to push for negotiable rights and SFW was right in the middle advocating for the hunter. We were told it could not be done, but SFW believed it could be and we proved it.

Wolf Coalition

SFW is an active member of the Wyoming Wolf Coalition and joined forces in the lawsuit against the USFWS in an effort to see the wolf delisted. Even though we have experienced a temporary setback with the gray wolf being re-listed under the endangered species act in 2009, we vow to continue the fight. We won't quit. We vocalize our concerns to various entities such as the USFWS and the Wyoming Game & Fish, regarding issues directly affecting our membership. We lobby at the local, state and national levels, demanding fair representation for the hunting sportsman. We make every effort to educate the non-hunting public, supporting and participating in such events as the annual Wyoming Hunting  & Fishing Heritage Expo designed specifically for our youth.
