Researchers, artist turn up noise to battle beetles

By JUDITH KOHLER Associated Press writer | Posted: Tuesday, February 16, 2010 12:15 am

DENVER -- Researchers from Arizona and a composer from New Mexico have teamed up to launch an acoustic counterattack against beetles that have ravaged millions of acres of trees across the West.

On Friday, January 29, 2010, Sportsmen from across Wyoming and the Northwest converged on Cheyenne, WY, prior to the court hearing concerning the wolf.

On Friday, January 29, 2010, at approximately 8:00 am, the rally started at the Capitol. Although our numbers were smaller than we would have liked, over 50 sportsmen attended the rally with Channel 13 & K2 News stations providing news interviews. Both news stations aired their interviews on Friday night and have provided the following links to their web site where the story can be seen.

Please see links below to both interviews.

Harriet Hageman - the Wolf Coalition Attorney, Jim Allen - Former President of Wyoming Outfitters & Guides Association, Joe Tilden - WY SFW President & Bob Wharff briefly addressed those at the brisk, early morning rally.  A few reporters also attended and asked several rally participants questions about their personal experiences with wolves, etc.

Upon conclusion, all participants at the rally walked down to the Federal Court House to attend the hearing.

At the hearing, both Jay Jerde, WY State Attorney, and Harriet Hageman, Wolf Coalition Attorney, and attorney for WY SFW as well, hammered home the fact that Wyoming's Plan is adequate to ensure that once wolves are delisted in Wyoming they will not become relisted. In their opening arguments, they highlighted the many turns and twists which have been experienced at the hands of the US Fish & Wildlife Service.

At one moment in time, Harriet asked all the members of the Wolf Coalition to stand. Practically everyone in the room stood up, sending a very strong image and message of the impact wolves are placing upon Wyoming's citizens.

The Attorney for the USFWS did the best he could to defend the indefensible position that the Department of Justice has created for itself. Suffice it to say, it did not appear that he convinced Judge Johnson on any of the points mentioned.

Harriet and Jay, shredded the arguments laid out by the USFWS during their rebuttals. Jim Davis, Park County Attorney, also participated in the rebuttal phase and represented Park County very well.

After arguments and rebuttals from both parties had been presented, the Honorable Judge Johnson, made brief comments. It appears he comprehended the importance of reaching his decision as soon as practical.

Here is a great link to Harriet's statements:

Following the hearing, a Press Conference was held at the Stock Growers Cheyenne Headquarters. The consensus of the group was that they are very optimistic of a favorable decision by this Court.

Bison hunt kills 140; take down 46 percent

Results likely won't cut into 2010 population but elk refuge forage preserved.

By Cory Hatch, Jackson Hole, Wyo.

Date: January 6, 2010

Jackson Hole's bison are learning to avoid open hunting areas, resulting in a roughly 46 percent drop in the number of animals killed in 2009-10 compared with the year before, wildlife managers say.

ATF Tries to Revoke "Montana Made" State Sovereignty Laws

We all predicted this would happen.

In a move typical for that fear-mongering organization with an ever-swelling acronym, the BATFE has written gun dealers in the states of Montana and Tennessee to let them know the BATFE will be disregarding the state sovereignty gun laws of each state

NRA Finally Joins Battle against Wolf

The NRA has finally joined in the fight to protect big game hunting in the West from the ravages of uncontrolled gray wolf populations - and from the anti-hunting organizations who are using the "Wolf Recovery Project" in their attempt to replace the hunter's role in wildlife
conservation.

Elk Foundation Files Motion to Intervene in Wolf Litigation

MISSOULA, MT  The Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation has filed a motion in Missoula federal court to enter an amicus curiae brief supporting state-regulated wolf hunting in Idaho and Montana. If the motion is granted by U.S. District Judge Donald Molloy, RMEF documents will be considered in Molloy's decision on whether to allow or stop the hunt.

A hearing is scheduled for Monday and a ruling could follow soon afterward.

A coalition of 13 environmental groups filed an emergency injunction asking Molloy to stop the planned hunt and return wolves to the endangered species list.

"Long gone are the days when species like elk, bears and wolves can go completely unmanaged. We don't live in a zoo and this isn't the old West. It is frustrating that America's wildlife conservation system, which has worked wonderfully well since the time of Theodore Roosevelt, has been reduced to a legal chess match," said David Allen, RMEF president and CEO.

Allen said the Elk Foundation's brief reinforces four main points:

  • Historic success of modern, hunter-based conservation in North America.
  • Viewpoints of hunters who continue to pay for the big-game resources that made wolf recovery possible.
  • RMEF-funded research, along with other scientific and anecdotal evidence, showing that wolf populations are fully recovered and that, where wolves are present with elk, wolves are having detrimental impacts on elk.
  • State wildlife agencies are best suited to manage wolves alongside other species.

Allen urged Wyoming and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to work together on a mutually agreeable wolf management plan to help clear a legal path to regulated wolf hunting in The Cowboy State.
